What is Glyburide?

Brand Name(s): Diabeta; Glynase; Micronase

  • Glyburide is in a class of drugs called sulfonylureas. It is used to help control blood sugar levels.

  • Glyburide is used to treat noninsulin-dependent (Type II) diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) along with diet, exercise, and insulin therapy, if necessary.

  • Glyburide may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.


  • What side effects can this medication cause?

    Common side effects from glyburide use:
  • bloating

  • heartburn

  • nausea


  • Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
  • headache

  • nasal congestion

  • runny nose

  • stomach pain

  • cough

  • diarrhea


  • If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:
  • skin rash or hives

  • itching or redness

  • exaggerated sunburn

  • yellowing of the skin or eyes

  • light-colored stools

  • dark or clay-colored urine

  • unusual bleeding or bruising

  • fever

  • sore throat
