What is Glipizide?
Glipizide is in a class of drugs called sulfonylureas. It is used to help control blood sugar levels.
Glipizide is used to treat noninsulin-dependent (Type II) diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) along with diet, exercise, and insulin therapy, if necessary.
Glipizide may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.
What side effects can this medication cause?
You should know the symptoms of low and high blood sugar and what to do if you have them.
Eat or drink a food or beverage with sugar in it, such as hard candy or fruit juice, and call your doctor immediately if you have any of the symptoms of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) :
shakiness
dizziness or lightheadedness
sweating
confusion
nervousness or irritability
sudden changes in behavior or mood
headache
numbness or tingling around the mouth
weakness
pale skin
sudden hunger
clumsy or jerky movements
seizures
Call your doctor immediately if you have any of the following symptoms of hyperglycemia (high blood sugar):
extreme thirst
frequent urination
extreme hunger
weakness
blurred vision
If high blood sugar is not treated, a serious, life-threatening condition called diabetic ketoacidosis could develop. Call your doctor immediately if you have any of the these symptoms:
dry mouth
upset stomach and vomiting
shortness of breath
breath that smells fruity
decreased consciousness
Glipizide may cause side effects. If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:
skin rash
itching or redness
exaggerated sunburn
yellowing of the skin or eyes
light-colored stools
dark urine
unusual bleeding or bruising
fever
sore throat
