What is Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer.  It is a cancer of mesothelial cells.  These cells cover the outer surface of most of our internal body organs, forming a lining that is sometimes called the mesothelium.  So this is where this type of cancer gets its name.

  • What is Pemetrexed?
  • Pemetrexed interferes with the production and maintenance of DNA, which is the genetic material in the cells of the body. Pemetrexed has a greater effect on cells that reproduce often, like cancer cells. This is how pemetrexed works in the treatment of cancer.
  • Pemetrexed is used in the treatment of pleural mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer associated with exposure to asbestos.

    Alimta may cause side effects that could be dangerous or life-threatening. Discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits of using Alimta before starting treatment. Alimta has been reported to cause blood and bone marrow problems (fever, chills, sore throat, unusual bruising or bleeding, black, bloody or tarry stools); nerve problems (numbness, tingling, pain); stomach problems (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite); sores in or around the mouth; rash; and others. Notify your doctor immediately if you develop any of these symptoms.

    What side effects may I notice from receiving Pemetrexed?
    Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
  • chest pain
  • confusion
  • depression
  • diarrhea
  • difficulty breathing
  • difficulty or pain upon swallowing
  • difficulty walking or pain when walking
  • mouth or throat sores or ulcers
  • skin rash, hives, or itching
  • symptoms of infection - fever or chills, cough, sore throat, pain or difficulty passing urine
  • symptoms of decreased platelets or bleeding - bruising, pinpoint red spots on the skin, black, tarry stools, blood in the urine
  • symptoms of decreased red blood cells (anemia) - unusual weakness or tiredness, fainting spells, lightheadedness, shortness of breath
  • vomiting
  • yellow coloring of skin or eyes
