Lung Cancer
Lung surgery (thoracotomy) for lung cancer
Surgery Overview
Surgery to remove all or part of a lung involves opening one side of your
chest (thorax) during a procedure called a thoracotomy. Surgery using this
approach avoids areas in the chest containing the heart and the spinal cord.
After the chest is opened, surgery to remove all or part of the lung is done
depending on the location, size, and type of lung tumor that is present.
How Well It Works
Surgery is more effective in early-stage non-small cell lung cancer when the
lung mass can be completely removed and the cancer has not spread to lymph
nodes or outside the chest cavity. Surgery is occasionally used in
limited-stage small cell lung cancer, though only 5% to 10% of small cell
lung cancers are diagnosed at this early stage.
